1. Write out exactly what you wish the genealogist to research or compile for you, this helps you clarify what you need.
  2. Look for a genealogist who is qualified in the areas that you need.  Then find an accredited genealogist eg: if in Australia you can view those accredited with the Australian Association of Genealogists  and Record Agents (AAGRA)  Other countries have similar associations.
  3. Contact the genealogist/s that you think would suit and request information about their fee structure, time frames and reporting to see if this aligns with your requirements.
