Why do some genealogists and record agents use logos?

A logo is more than just a pretty image—it’s a professional’s visual identity and branding. It helps clients quickly recognise a business or researcher, making it easier to build trust and maintain connections over time.

Why logos evolve: Most logos remain consistent for years, which aids recognition. However, there are good reasons to update them:

  • Company mergers or rebranding
  • Outdated designs that need refreshing
  • Technology requirements (smaller designs for apps and thumbnails)
  • Service changes—for instance, a genealogist who once offered general family tree research may now specialise in military records or a specific region, and their logo can reflect this expertise

AAGRA’s logo journey: Our own logo has evolved over the years—from a black and white oval design, to a colourised oval, and now to our current round version with enhanced clarity and sharper detail. Our design features a tree, a recognised symbol for genealogy, and the stars of the Southern Cross to represent our region.
