Family History Month – August 2025

August, Family History Month, is just around the corner.  The ideal time to take the opportunity to attend one of the many talks, workshops, online presentations that are available.

There no way we can list every single one, so we suggest checking what your local family history society are running.  Alternatively, a google search for one that interests you or gives you further information about your current area of interest.

We asked our members what they were attending during Family History Month and here were their answers:

August 1st 2025 – Sweat, Strikes & Sunshine: Queenslands Working Heritage, an event being held at the State Library or Queensland, South Brisbane, Queensland. This is followed by a free White Gloves Experience for those interested.

August 2nd 2025– They Came by Ship, a day learning about how and why our forbears came to Western Australia, at the FamilyHistoryWA meeting room in Bayswater, Western Australia.  Our member Judy Purkiss is attending this event.

August 2nd & 3rd 2025 – The Christchurch Family History Expo – 2 days of displays and free sessions covering various aspect of family history, at the Christchurch City Library, New Zealand.

August 15th  2025 –  80th Anniversary of “Victory in the Pacific Day Commemoration” at the Cenotaph, Martine Place Sydney, New South Wales.  Our member, Frances Cairns is attending this event.

August 16th 2025 – The 26th Great Irish Famine Commemoration Event at Hyde Park Barracks, Macquarie Street, Sydney, New South Wales, follow by lunch at PJ O’Brien’s Irish Pub.  Our member Frances Cairns is attending this event.

August 19th 2025 – Newspapers for Family History, an online workshop run the State Library Victoria.  Several of our members have participated in this or similar online event in the past and recommend this, particularly for new researchers.

August 23rd 2025 – Launch of the Indian and South Asian Special Interest Group by the Society of Australian Genealogists, Sydney, New South Wales.  Our member Rachel Croucher is involved in this launch.

August 26th 2025 – Tracing People Through Places at the National Archives of Australia in Adelaide, South Australia.

August 28th2025 – Tracing Aboriginal family history at the State Library and Archives of Tasmania in Hobart, Tasmania.

These events, are just the tip of the iceberg as to what is available during August for family history month, check out local libraries and family history groups in your area for what is available both onsite and online.  There’s sure to be something of interest to you.
