D – DNA Testing: Connecting Beyond Documents

“A to Z Genealogy Tips – Fortnightly Series”

DNA testing can complement traditional research, confirming relationships and breaking through brick walls.

Genetic testing reveals ethnic backgrounds and can connect you with relatives who may have documents or stories you do not have. However, before completing a DNA test also consider, are you prepared if there are unexpected results?  Your DNA matches are your biological relatives and this may differ to what has been put on paper.  For most people, DNA tests are a tool to assist with finding unknown biological relatives, break down brick walls or to understand their ethnicity.

When using DNA, privacy and ethical considerations are also very important. It usually pays to have done your homework first before making contact with your matches. DNA is most powerful when combined with documentation and/or solid analysis.  AAGRA have some genealogists who can assist if needed.

Consider whether taking a DNA test to uncover hidden connections in your family tree is of interest to you, only you can make this decision!
